THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH
This event is being run by Matt Collard a University of Brighton student and supported by the Brighton SU Wishing Well fund. The Freedom of Speech is an event to raise awareness of support for people with speech impairments
Tuesday 7th February, 5-6pm, Room D222, The Checkland Building, Falmer with speakers Matt Callard (UoB student) and Anne Blight (Founder of The Starfish Project)
Open to all - just come along, there will be refreshments and an opportunity to chat with the presenters after the talk
The release of the film The King’s Speech has put the issue of speech impairments in the public eye more than ever before. Matt will talk about how he is working to overcome his stammer, along with Anne who will talk about the work of local speech therapy course The Starfish Project,
“University can be a particularly challenging time for someone with a speech impairment - meeting new people, doing presentations, interviews, performing everyday tasks. Having tried numerous speech therapy approaches over the years, I had a breakthrough 5 years ago when I attended The Starfish Project which helped me enormously. Since that time (with a lot of work and support) my speech has improved dramatically, enabling me to do many things I couldn't do before, changing my life in a big way. Generally, there isn't much mentioned about support for people with speech impairments so I thought I'd try and help change that.” - Matt Callard

THE UNTOUCHABLES
This campaign is being run by UoB student Kerry Grainger and supported be the Brighton SU Wishing Well fund. She is currently recruiting for the photo shoot for this campaign
‘Fed up of looking at impossibly perfect bodies portrayed in today's media? Join the Untouchables campaign and help us create a photographic collection of real bodies, completely un-retouched and proud! Come in for a free photo shoot, Superhero style, and help us kick some retouching ass! We're looking for guys and girls of all shapes and sizes to come along and have some fun in the studio, posing in mid-air in black underwear or shorts or tops.
The shoots will take place over several days at the Circus Street Annexe - where the photography department of the University of Brighton is situated. Each session will take approximately 45 minutes and will be made as private and fun as possible. At the end of the shooting you can take a look at the images before confirming that you would like them to be used as part of the campaign. Have a glance at our test shots for an idea of the sort of thing you should expect!
We believe anti-retouching campaigns are so important because with all the big magazines and advertisements now relying heavily on photo shopped images the standard of beauty is being constantly shifted into something ever-more unattainable. Low body confidence and low self-esteem are two issues that relate directly to the distribution of such images and can often develop into far more serious issues surrounding our relationships with our bodies and our image in general. We want to show people that you don’t have to be air-brushed to look good and that beauty doesn’t come in a standard size or shape!’
